My buddies & I first came to Broward County in 1992 when my Uncle Leonard offered the guys and I his house for spring break.  Leaving the sleet & snow of Montreal, Canada behind, we hit the road never dreaming this would become a yearly pilgrimage for nearly a decade.  Each year, when Uncle Leonard hopped across the pond to indulge in all things wild and wonderful in Amsterdam, we’d cram our backpacks into the trunk of my Ford Falcon and make the 26 hour trek south.

Broward was filled with partiers … but we were there for the flora & fauna.  The Everglades had been our joint fascination for many years and then … in 1990 we’d heard about the newly constructed Riverwalk and were intrigued.  When we got wind of the Butterfly Garden we vowed to get there no matter what.  Thanks Uncle Leonard!  You gave us the doorway to paradise!

This year I vowed to take my partner and his teenage son to see, up close and personal, the place they’ve seen so many times in my photographic journals.  My work as an aquatic veterinarian has taken me across the globe but this year, I’m heading back to where it all started, good old Broward County, my first true love.

The problem I faced at the outset was getting us all there in one vehicle.  My Sprinter is ideal as a Vet-Mobile but it’s obviously not going to cut it for this trip.  I haven’t had a “personal” vehicle in years, spending almost all my time working or travelling abroad.  Here was an opportunity to treat myself to something I used to love … car shopping.  I’m a test-drive addict so this was something I looked forward to, big time!

I wanted something roomy enough for all of us … Emile & his son Jean-Jaques, all our gear (SCUBA and otherwise), great fuel economy and a quiet ride.  I drove some really nice vehicles and then … I found it.  The Jeep Rubicon … hybrid to satisfy my conscience, roomy, ultra quiet, great on-board navigation, tough enough to go off road and sexy enough to keep Emile as happy as a clam.  Broward County here we come!
